The most basic knitting stitch a beginner can learn. Once you've grasped the skill of knitting then contiue to knit ever single row and you will have a piece of garter stitch.

The Look
Characterised by is bumpy 'U' look. Garter stitch holds it's shape quite well and does not curl like stockinette stitch. Although it will look quite similar to reverse stockinette stitch, this pattern will look the same on the right and wrong side of your work.

Abbreviation
Garter stitch is sometimes abbreviated as (g st) in a pattern.

Tip: Garter stitch can be achieved by purling all the stitched too.
